Finding the problem

Once we started testing the system, we found the issue fast. The transformer that powered the lights had burned out. Digging deeper, we found the real cause: a short in one of the wires leading to the fence lights. Over time, that short had put too much strain on the transformer, and it gave out.

We replaced the transformer with a new 300-watt unit. This gives the system plenty of power without overloading it, even as the property's lighting needs grow.

Upgrading the fixtures

With the electrical issue solved, we moved on to the lighting itself. Along the fence, we installed new up-down lights from InLight. These fixtures throw light both downward, for a soft path glow, and upward, to catch the canopy of the trees above. We also repositioned some of the up lights aimed at the trees for better coverage, and swapped every bulb to a warm 3000K colour temperature. This gives the whole yard a softer, more natural glow.

Along the brick wall, we adjusted the well lights that were already in place and added new ones from the Unique brand where coverage was missing. The result is a wall that's evenly and beautifully lit, from end to end. We also added lighting near the front of the property to bring out the large mature tree that anchors the yard.

Built to last

The original problem wasn't just a worn-out transformer. It was exposed wiring. Even though the old wires ran through PVC pipe behind the fence, squirrels had managed to chew through them. To prevent this from happening again, we fully enclosed every wire behind the fence in solid pipe, leaving no exposed sections at all.

We also used copper crimp connectors with gel-filled tubes on every connection point. This keeps moisture out and protects the system from corrosion over time. Finally, before wrapping up, we recorded the primary and secondary voltage and amperage across every circuit. Having this on file means faster, easier service if anything ever comes up down the road.

The result

The property now has landscape lighting that works the way it should: safely, reliably, and beautifully. The backyard has a soft, inviting glow, the mature tree out front gets the attention it deserves, and the brick wall is lit evenly from corner to corner. Just as important, the system is now protected against the kind of damage that caused the original breakdown.
